A mammogram is a low dose x-ray examination designed to detect and diagnose early breast cancer. It is thought that women in NSW have a risk of 1 in 8 of developing breast cancer in their life time (Breast Screen NSW; Early Detection Is Vital) and the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. However it is paramount at all ages to have regular checks. Orana Radiology offers diagnostic mammography, biopsy and pre-operative hook wire procedures.
On the day of your mammogram it is very important that you don’t wear any talcum powder or deodorant as they may cause artefacts. We also suggest you wear two-piece clothing such as a skirt and blouse for your comfort and convenience.
It is very important that you tell the mammographer of any breast symptoms prior to your examination. It is equally important that you bring any previous mammograms for comparison as any subtle changes may be significant.
Specialised X-Ray machines and equipment are used to take two images of each breast and our Radiologists then interpret these. It is not uncommon to require additional images to further clarify a diagnosis.
For a Mammogram picture to be obtained it is necessary to gently compress the breast tissue, there may be slight discomfort from this but our staff are highly trained and will look after you throughout your procedure.
An Ultrasound exam may also be performed after your mammogram to further assist in a diagnosis.
