CT Scans

CT Scanning- sometimes called CAT scanning is an X-Ray test that helps doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions. During the scan, an X-Ray beam and an opposite set of detectors rotate around the patient measuring the radiation passing through the body, while the examination table is moving through the scanner. A computer processes this information allowing us to produce cross-sectional images in any direction of the patient’s body.

Some examinations require an injection of an X-Ray contrast into a vein to enhance the visibility of some structures or blood vessels. For most Abdominal and Pelvic scans you are required to drink a dilute barium substance over a period of about 45 to 60 minutes prior to your examination to delineate the bowel.

CT scans of the internal organs, bones and blood vessels provide greater clarity than conventional X-Ray examinations.

Orana Radiology uses a multi slice CT Scanner, making the examinations faster and more comfortable for the patients while delivering the highest quality.

Not all CT scanning is performed to diagnose medical conditions. Orana Radiology offers therapeutic procedures helping patients with chronic conditions to manage their pain using nerve block techniques. We use CT Fluoroscopy allowing the Radiologist to view real-time images to accurately inject anaesthetic and steroid to the affected area to provide longer lasting pain relief.

CT Fluoroscopy is also invaluable in performing needle biopsies. Our state of the art scanner allows the Radiologist to accurately obtain a tissue sample for the Pathologist to assess. This technique is particularly useful in the chest and abdomen.

For details on all the CT and CT Fluoroscopic examinations we provide please contact the reception staff at Orana Radiology.

FIRST IN THE COUNTRY – The New Toshiba Aquilion CXL 128 Slice LOW DOSE CT Scanner

Orana Radiology has recently installed the new “Toshiba Aquilion CXL 128 slice CT scanner, the first in the country and the first LOW DOSE CT scanner in the Central West.

With the number of CT scans performed growing exponentially, it was imperative that both manufacturers and Clinics look at reducing the levels of X-ray Radiation delivered to the patient.

The new AquilionCXL CT by Toshiba has the latest developments in radiation dose reduction and image quality improvements. The main technical advances on the CXL include;

  • AIDR3D – The latest advanced form of image reconstruction significantly reduces the radiation dose required while improving the quality of the images
  • Active Collimation – Eliminates the wasted radiation at the start and end of a helical CT scan
  • SureExposure3D- Automatically sets the correct amount of dose for each individual patient based on body size, shape and clinical indications.
  • ConeXact – increases the image resolution by enabling CT slices to be reconstructed every 0.25mm

In combination these 4 advanced technologies result in not only higher resolution images but also a reduction of radiation dose by up to 88% compared to CT scanners without these technologies! What this means is that for every CT examination the radiation dose is now lower and the accuracy of the scan is even higher.

The AquilionCXL is a 128slice CT scanner. Basically this is an indication of how fast the system is for scanning, the more slices the faster. Because the scanner is faster patient’s don’t need to hold their breath or hold still for as long, resulting in a much more comfortable experience. By scanning faster we can also reduce the amount of IV contrast for some studies and perform much higher quality advanced CT angiography examinations. The speed of the software has also significantly improved with plenty of new advanced applications available to us, making it possible to perform complex 3D reconstructions of the anatomy much easier.
